Whoever claimed that girls don't like to play in the mud never bothered to ask Ashley Buller of Billings. She loves to play dirty.
The 29-year-old woman has twice participated in the non-competitive Dirty Dash in Billings,a mud-run obstacle course. She, at times, wallowed in pits of mud and did it with a smile.
"The most fun part was just being in the dirt and in the mud," Buller said. "Everyone is just there to have fun and everyone is laughing a lot.
And, she added laughing, "A lot of beer is consumed -- and it's all free."
Buller, a self-described competitive person, said she was persuaded to enter after hearing the stories and seeing pictures of the previous events.
The obstacle course includes tires, tubes, ropes, nets and walls of different heights. You can navigate the course or choose to go around. It's your choice as long as you've having fun.
"I use it as a way to compete with myself moreso than some boring road race," Buller said of the 3.1-mile course.

This year's event is a 5K course set on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at MetraPark. All participants will receive a new T-shirt and bottle opener. The Dirty Dash is considered the best mud run/obstacle course of the West.

The first Billings Dirty Dash was held in 2011 and has attracted at least 3,500 in a single year. Many of the dashers dress in costume, adding to the fun.
