Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

In 2012, the most recent year numbers are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • 224,147 women and 2,125 men in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • 41,150 women and 405 men in the United States died from breast cancer.
But millions of women are surviving the disease in part to early detection and improvements in treatment. according to the American Cancer Society.

St. Vincent Healthcare is on a mission to raise awareness and money to improve the quality of care for breast cancer as well as highlight the importance of early detection.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, St. Vincent Healthcare will be holding or sponsoring a variety of awareness events. Community members are invited and encouraged to attend to honor those diagnosed with breast cancer, celebrate survivors and help raise awareness about this disease. Fundraising events will also be held to support the EVA Project.

The EVA Project was founded by a woman diagnosed with breast cancer at age 48, despite having no family history of the disease, according to Julissa Talkington, communications intern for St. Vincent Healthcare. Because her cancer was diagnosed early, Eva’s treatment proved successful, and she wanted to ensure that every woman had the same opportunity. She teamed with the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation to raise the funds necessary to provide free mammograms to women over the age of 40 who were uninsured or underinsured.
