Sky Ferreira Sparks Controversy in ‘I Blame Myself’ Video [NSFW]

Sky Ferreira‘s music video for ‘I Blame Myself’ just debuted two days ago, but already it has been ripe for controversy.

The video, which features a punk-rock-looking Ferreira ultimately getting arrested and being questioned by police, also shows her hanging out with a group of black men in inner-city L.A., some of whom get into fights with one another before becoming her backup dancers halfway through the video. Already, Ferreira has come under fire for the portrayal of the men in her video, with some people calling her racist.

Ferreira has taken to Facebook to address the controversy, writing:

“Some people are accusing of being racist. I usually do not need to feel the need to explain myself (which I’m not) but I DO feel the need to share my thoughts on the situation. Nothing upsets me more than being called racist because that is one of the most hateful things anyone can be,” she says. “Not only do I find it insulting towards myself but I also feel insulted for the actors & dancers & my family in the video. No, I did not use black back up dancers as ‘props’. … I auditioned a bunch of dancers, all races & my dancers were the best ones. … Stop trying to search for something that isn’t there.”

But Ferreira didn’t just respond to the accusations. She also better explained her influences behind the video:

“I’m from LA & shot the video there,” she wrote on Facebook. “I referenced ’90s hip hop videos and Michael Jackson because both of those things inspire me & played a big part of my childhood.”

Despite the intense scrutiny of the video, ‘I Blame Myself’ is a catchy tune with an old-school vibe that brings back the retro feel of ’80s Madonna. And Ferreira, who is currently on tour with Miley Cyrus, looks perfectly punk, with choppy, jet black hair, deep crimson lipstick and her trademark scowl on her face.
