It’s been a year since rumors of a Peter Berg-directed Rihanna documentary first emerged online, and it looks like the project -- appropriately titled Rihanna -- is finally moving forward.

Berg, who directed the feature film Friday Night Lights and executive-produces series The Leftovers and Ballers, posted a photo to Instagram of the two with the caption, “This girl RiRi she’s not bad. See I’m smiling I ain’t mad,” indicating that, at the very least, they're spending time together.

According to a description on the website for Berg's production company Film 45, the documentary will be less centered on the music aspect of Rihanna’s life and deal more with the narrative surrounding her persona and rise to fame.

“Follow this true international superstar as she navigates life as an artist, businesswoman, and humanitarian, while contending with the inherent pressure of artistic freedom,” the description reads. “Peter Berg’s Rihanna is an unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and how she’s ascended to become a global icon, providing a glimpse into the evolution of one of the world’s most well-known pop artists.”

Berg has stated in the past that the 1967 Bob Dylan documentary Don’t Look Back serves as a major inspiration for Rihanna, and that the actual film will follow suit in being “more a character study than a music film,” according to a report from Deadline.

A release date has not yet been set.

Berg previously worked with Rihanna when he cast her in the 2012 film Battleship, which was met with largely negative reviews. Let's hope their next collaboration is more successful.
