The new ‘Seventh Son’ trailer is startling reminder that yes, this movie still exists and wasn’t something our addled brains cooked up while we were bed-ridden and battling a fever. Someone actually shot a movie where the great Jeff Bridges, complete with his trademark Rooster Cogburn mumble, plays a witch-hunting, monster-slaying magical warrior. And yes, you do remember correctly: this thing was supposed to come out in 2013 and yes, it was delayed to 2015. The word you’re looking for there is “Yikes.”

The film wound up being delayed when Legendary Pictures, who financed the film, broke off from Warner Bros. and announced a new partnership with Universal. Legendary took the film to their new home and Universal pushed it back as they tried to figure out what the heck to do with this thing.

Watching the new trailer now, it’s hard to imagine any version of ‘Seventh Son’ being any good. This movie looks like little more than a collection of tired fantasy tropes and many of the visual effects shots simply look unfinished at best. Everyone forgetting that this thing existed was probably part of a much grander plan to bury the film.

Still, we’d like to think that we can derive some level of enjoyment from an effects-driven adventure where an actor as good as Bridges takes his new apprentice (Ben Barnes) on his quest to kill an evil witch played by Julianne Moore. Then we look at the tired visuals and grimace at Bridges recycling that voice again and go back to forgetting this movie ever existed in the first place. This could be a case of a bad trailer representing a good movie, but they had an extra 18 months to figure out how to sell this thing! Is this really the best they can do? If so: ugh.

‘Seventh Son’ will finally be released on February 15, 2015. Or it could simply vanish into the ether, never to be seen again. Honestly, not that many people would notice either way.
