Through most of my life I have had a pet, a couple of cats but mainly dogs.  If you have a dog or more than one in our case they become an extension of your family.  What I remember to this day is that on the 4th of July fireworks show our Comet and Derby just plain freak out!  At about this time each year, Keri and I talk about what to do with the dogs on the 4th while we head to Laurel or Castlerock Park in Billings Heights to watch the fireworks show.

There is no magic pill to give your thunder and firework scared mutt but there are ways to help ease the anxiety dogs feel when the booms begin!  I invited the “nature guy”, Jeff Ewelt from Zoo Montana in to the Billings Morning News to help ease our pain.

Jeff touched on the fact that all dogs want is to feel safe.  If your dog is firework frightened one of the best remedies is to find him a nice, cool space with water and maybe some toys and snacks.  Leaving a T.V. or radio on at a moderate level will also ease the anxiety of what is about to happen at 10:01 p.m. on July 4th.

If you are holding your dog and thunder or fireworks start banging just gently squeeze your pet, he will sense safety and security.  You can also look into a product on the  market that does the squeezing for you essentially.  Look into the Thundershirt.
