‘Gravity’ Trailer: A One-Take Shot of Awesomeness

After wowing the Comic-Con 2013 crowds in Hall H, Alfonso Cuaron‘s ‘Gravity‘ has released a new trailer that plays on one of the film’s great strengths: an extended sequence with no cutting, featuring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock facing debris that might kill them.

And our first reaction after watching this trailer is that this film appears to be what 3-D was made for. We’ve become skeptical about third-dimension films considering how many of them seem to be made with little regard for the process, but this looks to be a master filmmaker using these toys in a way we haven’t seen. This is a must see now, no question.

‘Gravity’ opens October 4. Here’s the film’s synopsis.

Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

UPDATE: Warner Bros. has released an additional trailer for ‘Gravity,’ title “Drifting,” made in the same single-shot manner as the footage shown above.

UPDATE #2: One more ‘Gravity’ trailer, just in case you weren’t queasy enough.
