The Fourth of July, for many, is the zenith of summer. Families and friends gather for pool parties, outdoor barbecues and, of course, fireworks.

But as the big day approaches, the Billings Police Department and Billings Fire Department remind residents that possession and/or use of fireworks within the city limits is illegal.

To keep residents -- and property -- safe, both departments will increase staffing and enforcement efforts on and around the Fourth of July.  Enforcement action includes, but is not limited to citation, possible criminal charges, and confiscation of all fireworks.

These efforts, along with other precautions such as closure of the Rims, are intended to eliminate injuries and risk of structure or grass fire caused by fireworks, said Lt. Casey Hafner of the Billings Police Department.
