Man, what does AMC have against the modern day? Following earlier announcements of a ‘Walking Deadcompanion series, ‘Breaking Badprequel, period dramas ‘Turn‘ & ‘Halt & Catch Fire,’ the cable network has officially announced its next batch of pilots; period drama ‘Knifeman,’ and a Ridley Scott post-apocalyptic drama titled ‘Galyntine,’ which should feel rather familiar to fans of NBC’s ‘Revolution.’

Via The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Knifeman’ follows Wendy Moore’s similarly-titled John Hunter biography to chronicle an 18th century London man described as a “charming, arrogant, decorum-breaking genius who challenges societal norms to transform his visions into cutting-edge discoveries.” Rolin Jones (‘Friday Night Lights‘) will write the pilot and executive produce alongside Ron Fitzgerald, Josh Donnen and Robert Zotnowski.

Meanwhile, ‘Galyntine’ follows a familiar formula as “a cataclysmic technology-induced disaster has resulted in a new society that has eschewed any form of technology.” The event leaves small groups of survivors scattered around the planet, forcing them to adapt to isolation and unique challenges. Jason Cahill (‘Fringe‘) wrote the pilot and will executive produce with ‘The Walking Dead’ EP Greg Nicotero, David Zucker and Ridley Scott.

“These are both highly original and ambitious pilots that take us into worlds that we haven’t seen on TV before,” AMC exec Joel Stillerman adds. “The bawdiness and fun of Knifeman and London in the mid-18th century; and the completely unique take on a post-apocalyptic world in Galyntine are right in AMC’s wheelhouse of making television that is both unexpected and unconventional. They’re both driven by creative and production teams that we know are capable of delivering ground-breaking television.”

AMC certainly has quite a few slots to fill, what with their decision to pass on ‘The Killing’ season 4, a likely cancellation for ‘Low Winter Sun,’ and ‘Mad Men”s drawn-out end, but what say you? Do ‘Knifeman’ or ‘Galyntine’ sound up to snuff?
