All Saints Return in 2016 With Dreamy, Devastating Comeback Track, ‘One Strike’

There's nothing like a comeback...especially a re-comeback.

One full decade after the release of first reformation (2006's Studio 1) and nine years after the release of their last single (2007's "Chick Fit"), Melanie Blatt, Shaznay Lewis, Nicole and Natalie Appleton — together the All Saints — are back at it yet again today (February 23) with their new single, "One Strike."

Best known for their late '90s and early '00s smash hits like "Never Ever," "Pure Shores" and "Black Coffee," the girls racked up nine Top 10 singles during their extended reign since their 1997 self-titled debut. They return this year for the second time with their upcoming record, Red Flag, due out on April 8.

Their new single, "One Strike," was written by Shaznay Lewis, who told i-D that the song was influenced by a phone call member Nicole Appleton received leading to her divorce with Oasis' Liam Gallagher.

"'One Strike' is about how your life can just change in one instant. You can be walking down the road, you've just left your family at home and everything's hunky dory, then when you go back home they're gone. On one side of the door your life's amazing, on the other side it changes just like that."

"And with one strike, my world lights up in a fire / Call it a sign / Don't need hindsight / I'll make my emotions clear and then disappear," the girls harmonize across the hazy production and a (rock) steady, galloping beat. It's brilliantly understated, armed with an impressively immediate chorus (plus those "ooh-ooh" chants at the very end!), and surely the dreamiest sounding ode to devastation you'll hear in some time.

Similar to the return of the Sugababes in the form of Mutya Kesha Siobhan back in 2013 with "Flatline," the song manages to highlight the group's classic sound while still placing them comfortably in 2016 — or beyond, really. It feels pretty timeless.
