My daughter turns 8 in a couple of weeks and the ONE thing she has asked for is a sewing machine. When I asked her why she told me that she would be able to make Christmas presents for people. Wow. That made me proud, but something seems a little strange about the whole thing.

We'll of course be having a party for her and I'm sure her friends and their parents will have puzzled looks if she unwraps a sewing machine. Maybe I'm wrong, but it almost seems like giving her a vacuum cleaner or some other domestic chore tool.

So what am I going to do? How will I decide if this is ultimately a good or bad thing? I'll do what most dads do...I'll ask her mother.
