Martin Kaymer shot a one-under par 69 on Sunday to win the 2014 U.S. Open golf championship at Pinehurst in North Carolina in dominant fashion. Kaymer shot a four-round 271, leaving him nine-under par for the tournament and eight strokes better than runner-up Erik Compton.

Kaymer became the first German ever to win the U.S. Open. It was his second major title, including the 2010 PGA Championship.

Grabbing the lead after his first-round 65 on Thursday, Kaymer kept the pressure on the field with another 65 on Friday. His third-round 72 allowed Compton and Rickie Fowler to close within five strokes heading into the final round, but neither golfer seriously challenged the 29-year-old German's lead on Sunday.

Fowler finished third. Five golfers tied for fourth: Americans Keegan Bradley, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Australia's Jason Day.
